# Homayoon Dialogues, Part 1

I’ve started, then forgotten about several categories of posts here on Substack over the past five years or so. One of these, inspired by a writer who promised (threatened?) something daily and never quite delivered, was this series: Daily Dose.

This was meant to replace my old pre-Substack series, **Piano Diaries**, many of which are still available on [Bandcamp](https://petersaltzman.bandcamp.com/album/best-of-piano-diaries?ref=musically-novel.ghost.io). The idea was daily improvisations. I did that for a while, not necessarily daily, but more often than not. (Some would say too often, but the idea was exactly what the title implied: a daily diary of my musical thoughts through free improvisations, along with a few choice words and images that they inspired.)

At a certain point or age, I lost interest, then regained it for approximately a few days with this series. Perhaps a hundred years from now, a musicologist or historian will delve into these, understanding them as a laboratory of my musical development over time.

Or perhaps one person is doing that now: my dear friend, [Homayoon Zarean](https://substack.com/@homayoonzarean?ref=musically-novel.ghost.io), exiled Iranian musician and writer, whose profound writing and music appear almost daily on Substack. My regular dialogues with Homayoon, both here and via email, have taught me a great deal not only about his culture but also about my own. Furthermore, Homayoon has discovered things in my own music and writing that I only suspected.

This particular improvisation was inspired by his essay [today](https://substack.com/home/post/p-209232158?ref=musically-novel.ghost.io) on musical silence, which I suspect was inspired by the opening chapter of my memoir, [Blues, Preludes & Feuds.](https://musically-novel.ghost.io/433/) (Another series I tried to forget, and am now returning to.)

In any case, my ongoing dialogue with Homayoon has inspired me to revivify this series. So this one is dedicated to him.
